FAI Backs Resolution Calling for European Football Ban on Israeli Teams

The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to submit a official proposal to Uefa, demanding the banning of Israel from all European club and international tournaments.

Basis of the Proposed Suspension

The resolution, which was proposed by Dublin club Bohemians, cited claimed breaches by the IFA of a couple of important European football regulations.

  • Inability to apply and uphold an proper policy against racism.
  • Organisation of clubs in occupied Palestinian territories lacking the approval of the Palestinian Football Association.

Vote Outcome and Future Actions

As stated in an announcement from the Irish FA, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and 2 not voting.

They plans to formally submit this motion to the Uefa executive committee, seeking the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from Uefa competitions.

During a special assembly of the Football Association of Ireland, an standard motion was posed to delegates. It passed by a majority.

Earlier European Deliberations

Uefa had earlier put on hold intentions to ban Israel at the end of September, following the announcement of a US peace proposal for the region.

Although Uefa never officially confirmed considering an extraordinary meeting on the issue, plans were understood to be well developed.

Global Context

This Irish resolution comes after comparable demands in last autumn from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's governing bodies for Israel's suspension from global football.

Those requests were issued after UN specialists urged world and European football bodies to suspend the Israeli FA, referencing a UN investigation that accused the country of committing genocide during the war in Gaza.

The Israeli government has denied these allegations and described the report as outrageous.

Potential Ramifications

If Uefa choose to ban the IFA, it would probably create tension with the United States government – co-hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an action.

Even though the European body has the power to suspend Israeli teams from European competitions, it may not be able to prevent them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under world football's governing body.
