Labuschagne Left Out from Australian ODI Squad Versus Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a shock call-up.
Performance Issues Lead to Omission
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad following managing only a single run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.
Labuschagne has featured in 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates
There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia search for a fix to their opening batting issues.
Pace Returns and Fitness Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a back injury by the time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
