Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to the Game
The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the title since the mace made its debut. The lance is now available and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you enjoy mayhem.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates several new features and updates related to animal mounts in the game. That focus made the spear the ideal addition for this update, as the creators had long felt it was time for a new weapon.
"We knew initially that we aimed for a new weapon that would add some more range, and we wanted it to be mounted combat," noted a senior product manager. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."
If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your allies on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move excellently designed for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is a major applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the quick stab, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and inflict more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for mounted duels."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it needs to become an Olympic sport right away.
Another key feature in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is inspired by the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also conserve your air supply, so there's no necessity to surface for oxygen.
The other inclusions are mostly things that seek your demise, as is the way of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you are able to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.
"We've been thinking about this issue periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus design sketches looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also notes that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Additional features include the Parched, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a similar exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can cross bodies of water while riding a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
Overall, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a major improvement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mayhem Mounts update is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
