RFU Pushing for Joint Response from Global Unions

The RFU is understood to be advocating a unified response from global rugby associations, and has suggested a joint statement stating that all players participating in R360 will not be selected for international rugby.

Nonetheless, a formal agreement is still pending.

Female Competition Stays Uncertain as RFU Awaits Clarity

The RFU's stance on the women's competition is more ambiguous, as it has obtained conflicting information from R360 over its scheduling.

Although the first event is scheduled to begin next October, in 2027 a extended R360 has been scheduled to begin in April, directly clashing with the premier women's rugby tournament.

The RFU will not permit any of its 32 full-time national women's squad to miss the championship, but with R360 allegedly offering high-paying contracts to several Red Roses stars, an accommodation might be possible if a clash is avoided.

Potential Division in Champion Squad Creates Major Challenge

The potential for disunity among John Mitchell’s World Cup-winning squad presents a major problem for the RFU, and the money available may compel it to be more accommodating.

The first R360 tournament next year is scheduled to include four women’s teams and eight men’s sides, with the opening games planned for October 2, 2026.

Global Players’ Union Refuses to Support R360

R360 suffered further opposition when the global players' union (the association), which represents top men’s and women’s players in the world, notified its members that it would not endorse the tournament.

While union officials held talks with R360 during the British and Irish Lions tour last summer, their communication to members characterised the discussions as a fact-finding mission.

In recent months, various information has been in the public domain about the proposed R360 league and we understand that lately, a proposed draft long-form player contract may have been circulated by R360 to players and/or representatives.

While IRPA and its members have had certain talks with R360 representatives, these discussions have been focused on gathering information to understand the specifics about the financial structure, the competition, its execution and its relationship with the existing ecosystem.

Detailed information about the league remains unavailable and the event does not at present have World Rugby regulatory approval.

World Rugby Approval Still Awaited

The new competition is still awaiting approval by World Rugby, with reports revealing that it had pulled a scheduled submission in last month.

Proposals are scheduled for resubmission next June, but sources have suggested that the competition will launch the following year irrespective of whether they receive official sanction.

The inability to combine joining the upcoming international league with an international career could have a significant effect on R360's recruitment plans.

R360 is understood to have agreed pre-contract agreements with more than 200 athletes, eighty percent of whom have played international rugby in the last 24 months.
